These belonged to a library of clay tablets perfectly preserved by having been baked in the fire that destroyed the palace. Here some dozen documents dated 2400 BC describe the lands of the king and the queen. Olive trees and oil production in the Eastern Mediterranean can be traced to archives of the ancient city-state Ebla (2600–2240 BC), which were located on the outskirts of the Syrian city Aleppo. Trade and production Ancient oil press (Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, Bodrum, Turkey)Īrchaeological evidence shows that by 6000 BC olives were being turned into olive oil and in 4500 BC at a now-submerged prehistoric settlement south of Haifa. Recent genetic studies suggest that species used by modern cultivators descend from multiple wild populations, but detailed history of domestication is unknown. Olive trees were introduced to the Americas in the 16th century when cultivation began in areas that enjoyed a climate similar to the Mediterranean such as Chile, Argentina, and California. Later, as Greek colonies were established in other parts of the Mediterranean, olive farming was introduced to places like Spain and continued to spread throughout the Roman Empire. The cultivation of olive trees in Crete became particularly intense in the post-palatial period and played an important role in the island's economy, as it did across the Mediterranean. Olive trees were certainly cultivated by the Late Minoan period (1500 BC) in Crete, and perhaps as early as the Early Minoan. The earliest surviving olive oil amphorae date to 3500 BC ( Early Minoan times), though the production of olive oil is assumed to have started before 4000 BC. Evidence also suggests that olives were being grown in Crete as long ago as 2500 BC. Until around 1500 BC, eastern coastal areas of the Mediterranean were most heavily cultivated. The olive tree reached Greece, Carthage and Libya sometime in the 28th century BC, having been spread westward by the Phoenicians. The modern olive tree may have originated in ancient Persia and Mesopotamia and spread to the Levant and later to North Africa, though some scholars argue for an Egyptian origin. It is not clear when and where olive trees were first domesticated. Early cultivation Ancient Greek olive oil production workshop in Klazomenai, Ionia (modern Turkey) Olive oil was also popular as a form of birth control Aristotle in his History of Animals recommends applying a mixture of olive oil combined with either oil of cedar, ointment of lead, or ointment of frankincense to the cervix to prevent pregnancy. From its beginnings early in the 7th century BC, the cosmetic use of olive oil quickly spread to all of the Hellenic city-states, together with athletes training in the nude, and lasted close to a thousand years despite its great expense. The Spartans and other Greeks used oil to rub themselves while exercising in the gymnasia. Besides food, olive oil has been used for religious rituals, medicines, as a fuel in oil lamps, soap-making, and skincare application. Wild olives, which originated in Asia Minor, were collected by Neolithic people as early as the 8th millennium BC. Olive oil has long been a common ingredient in Mediterranean cuisine, including ancient Greek and Roman cuisine. Extra virgin olive oil is required to have no more than 0.8% free acidity and is considered to have favorable flavor characteristics. It consists mainly of oleic acid (up to 83%), with smaller amounts of other fatty acids including linoleic acid (up to 21%) and palmitic acid (up to 20%). The composition of olive oil varies with the cultivar, altitude, time of harvest, and extraction process. Other large producers are Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey and Morocco. Spain is the world's largest producer, manufacturing almost half of the world's olive oil. Olive trees have been grown around the Mediterranean since the 8th millennium BC. The olive is one of three core food plants in Mediterranean cuisine, together with wheat and grapes. It also has additional uses in some religions. It can also be found in some cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, soaps, and fuels for traditional oil lamps. It is commonly used in cooking for frying foods or as a salad dressing. Olive oil is a liquid fat obtained by pressing whole olives, the fruit of Olea europaea, a traditional tree crop of the Mediterranean Basin, and extracting the oil. We went to get away from the city and relax before our first baby arrives (in October!). We truly enjoyed our stay at Meander Plantation. There are some great antique stores in the area and a. The Inn was the perfect location between Culpeper and Orange if you would like to get out and about. We were able to see the cemetery on the far back side of the property (the walk to the cemetery is completely worth it!) The sunsets were beautiful every evening we were there. The grounds were perfect to walk around and just relax. We truly enjoyed talking and getting to know Suzanne. Suzanne (and Callie) was so accommodating and patient with our dog Cypress (she has a tendency to jump when she meets new people). Our dog who is picky about food loved the homemade treats. My two favorite items that we had were the "Eggs Ranchero" and the Espresso Dark Chocolate Pots de Creme (was out of this world!). We had an awesome picnic lunch and a dinner basket. The food was amazing! We had a wonderful 3 course breakfast every morning. The bed was very comfy, especially for afternoon naps! There was ample storage space for clothing. Our room (Madison Cottage) was very neat and clean. We stayed for 3 nights and loved every minute. Starched white napkins was a great touch, and you can just imagine Thomas Jefferson nodding his head in approval as he walked the long drive disappearing in the morning mist amongst the daffodils. We truly enjoyed our stay at Meander Plantation. (bring closed shoes) There is one seating for breakfast in the morning and the selections are well portioned and nicely prepared. There were over 80 acres of gently rolling paths for us to explore. Early sights in the morning ran the gamut of horses grassing on spring growth, a Gardner gently cultivating the natural herb garden used to enhance the evening meals in the main house. The grounds were out of a romance novel with the greenest pastures we had ever seen. We purchased wine from the main house by the glass at a reasonable cost. Our pets were treated with homemade tasty treats specially prepared by the sous chef on the property! We had access to hot coffee and tea in our room and in the main house 24 hours a day. What luck! The king bed was full of pillows and we sunk into a deep sleep each night with the sounds of hoot owls outside our windows. We couldn't believe that we were automatically upgraded to the beautiful and roomy "summer kitchen". We added on the romantic package to our pet package and received beautiful red roses, lushess chocolates, iced sparkling white wine, all served right in our "automatic upgraded" accommodations. (make sure you select package deals for the best value) The following day we had a picnic lunch made up of seasoned white chicken breast, apples, homemade chocolate and raisins cookies, bottled (at the source) spring water, and a side of sweet peppers. She lead us right to our room, and brought a beautiful hot dinner basket to us with fresh asparagus soup, pork loin, broccoli reb, mashed potatoes, flour-less chocolate cake, (so decadent) real plates and napkins, bread and butter.all included in our package. We were greeted by Suzanne, the manager and she made us feel welcome without wondering what we were suppose to do next. If you need high tea and a chatty host, this isn't the B&B for you, however if you want all the comforts of home that "beams you up and back" to the 1700's, then you found you place to relax, unwind, and even get some work done on free Wifi. We are indebted to Suzie and Suzanne for a very special weekend, and look forward to returning soon. The dinner was fabulous, and it was so special to share a quiet Valentines dinner alone together in our room. Well, that was an absolute highlight for us. Because ours was a last-minute reservation, the restaurant's dinner had no more spaces available, but since it was Valentines day, and all of the local restaurants were full, the innkeepers were kind enough to allow us to order a dinner basket for our room. My sweetie is a history buff, so he loved that Thomas Jefferson had been here (I did too). Our room, the Jefferson, was not what I was looking for in terms of ambience, but it was the only one available. On this visit, my partner and I came for what turned out to be a very lovely and special weekend. I had been here twice before, including bringing my parents and whole family (including siblings and spouses) to celebrate my parents special wedding anniversary a number of years ago. It helps that much of the exploration is active, with the protagonist being able to traverse on foot or by bike. There will be times when the pacing is indeed slow, but it is not meandering. Unlike games of its type, SEASON does not have a lot of reading going on, which actually improves the pacing. However, for those interested in narrative adventures and cozy, laid-back experiences, you’ll feel right at home. The game projects a certain level of meditative traversal, so if you’re more of an action fan, this probably won’t appeal to you. There will be a lot of voice-overs and codex collecting, so you can easily determine if this is something you want in a game or not. There is a lot of bike riding, but there’s also quite a bit of poetic introspection, and you can think of it as a mix of Death Stranding’s traversal and the introspection seen in Life is Strange. SEASON is an atmospheric adventure on a bike, which is exactly what you’ll be doing for the most part. How will this journey unfold? Will the adventurer complete their task, or will something else happen? Hop on that bike and find out! Armed with a camera and tape recorder, the adventurer leaves on their bicycle to record their findings and hopefully reach their ultimate destination before the season ends. Nothing is known about the outside world, save for a devastating war and a mysterious disease that followed. SEASON is a story about an adventurer who has taken a journey outside of their village after being tasked to investigate an impending cataclysm. You won’t have to stick to the main road: cycling off the beaten path will lead you to hidden places and new discoveries. When you’re cycling, you feel resistance in the controller’s adaptive triggers when pedalling up steep hills, and then enjoy a relaxing coast downhill. With the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller, you will feel the terrain under your tires, thanks to the controller’s haptics. Via the act of recording, your exploration and investigation are rewarded throughout the story in surprising ways. Through snapshots and recordings, you build an evolving expression of your own perspective on what you’ve seen and done on your trip. It all comes together in your journal, a letter to the future, where you assemble the fragments of the season into a whole. Showing your recordings to these characters you meet can also yield useful pieces of information or a moment of connection.
